The History of Lago Negro

Although it looks natural, Lago Negro is actually an artificial lake created in 1953 by chemical engineer and landscape architect Leopoldo Rosenfeldt. The area where the lake sits was originally known as Vale do Bom Retiro (Good Retreat Valley) and belonged to the Bier family. However, in 1942, a devastating fire destroyed all the vegetation in the region. To contain the flames, local residents dug a hole to collect water from a nearby spring. A year later, Leopoldo Rosenfeldt and his wife, Eleonora Collor Rosenfeldt, reforested the area and created a park with a lake from that spring-fed hole.

Inspired by European parks and gardens, Lago Negro features pine trees brought from the Black Forest in Germany, which explains its name. The lake’s dark, enigmatic water is the result of submerged trees and vegetation, giving it a unique appearance.
